FAQ’s
Is this program right for dogs with serious behaviour problems?
If you’re feeling like your dog’s behaviour is taking over your life; avoiding walks, worrying about visitors, or constantly managing their anxiety, this program is designed for exactly that.
The Behavioural Rehabilitation Program is built to support dogs with a range of behavioural challenges by taking a structured, personalised approach. Instead of trying to manage everything on your own, you’ll have a clear plan and professional guidance to help your dog develop better habits.
For many Adelaide dog owners, this has meant moving from daily stress and uncertainty to feeling more confident, in control, and able to enjoy life with their dog again.
What kind of results can I expect from the Behavioural Rehabilitation Program?
The goal of the program is to help your dog become calmer, more responsive, and easier to live with in everyday situations.
That might look like being able to walk your dog without constantly scanning for triggers, having guests over without stress, or simply relaxing at home without ongoing behaviour issues. It can even mean dropping them off for some fun in our daycare program! Progress is built step-by-step, focusing on practical changes that improve your real day-to-day life.
Just as importantly, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to continue supporting your dog long after the program.
How is this different from a standard dog training program?
This program is designed specifically for behaviour change, not just basic training. It takes a deeper look at why your dog is behaving a certain way and builds a structured plan to address those underlying issues.
With a combination of one-on-one training, a controlled environment, and ongoing feedback, your dog gets consistent guidance while you stay involved and informed. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, it’s tailored to your dog, your goals, and your lifestyle. We focus on what will actually work for you and your dog – in your life.
What happens on my dog’s first day in the program?
Before your dog starts, you’ll have an initial consultation where we take the time to understand your dog’s history, behaviour, and your goals.
On their training days, you’ll drop your dog off in the morning, and they’ll work one-on-one with a qualified behavioural trainer. Their day includes active training sessions focused on your goals, followed by structured rest time where they learn to settle in a calm, controlled environment.
At the end of the day, you’ll receive a detailed handover so you know exactly what was worked on and how your dog is progressing.
Will my dog be trained in real-life situations or just in a facility?
Your dog’s training takes place in a controlled environment where they can safely learn new behaviours without becoming overwhelmed.
This allows trainers to carefully guide your dog through challenges like impulse control, socialisation, and responding appropriately to different situations. These skills are then designed to carry over into your everyday life, whether that’s at home, on walks, or out in your local Adelaide community.
While this training takes place at our facility, we do take dogs outside where it helps training. We can also work on foundations to prepare your dog for excursion academy or outdoor group classes. Your trainer will discuss goals with you and ensure we are working towards this training if that is your aim.
How involved do I need to be in the program?
You play an important role in your dog’s progress. While your dog is trained during the day, you’ll receive clear feedback and homework to continue the work at home.
This means you’re not left guessing, you’ll know exactly what to do and how to do it. Your reports from your trainer will include videos and photos of their training to help you be confident and consistent as a handler. Staying involved helps create consistency, which is key to long-term behaviour change.
For most owners, this leads to feeling more confident and capable, rather than reliant on ongoing help.
What kind of support will I get during the program?
You’ll receive regular updates through handovers and progress reports, so you always know how your dog is going and what the next steps are.
These updates break everything down into clear, manageable information; what’s improving, what needs more work, and what you can do at home to help. This ongoing communication helps you feel supported and reassured throughout the process.
Our team is always receptive to feedback, if you can’t picture how certain training leads to your goals or you need to shift focus, let your trainer know and we can explain or adjust their training plan to ensure you are confident and believe in the training every step of the way!
Will this program help my dog feel more comfortable around other dogs or people?
A key part of the program is helping your dog learn to respond more appropriately to the world around them. Our ultimate goal is for them to just get to be a dog.
Through structured training and guided exposure, your dog can begin to build confidence, improve social skills, and feel more settled in situations that may have previously been overwhelming.
For our clients, this means less stress in public, fewer tense moments, and a dog that is easier to manage in social environments.
What happens after my dog completes the Behavioural Rehabilitation Program?
As your dog progresses, you’ll have a clearer picture of their behaviour and how to continue supporting them at home. Once you are confident and you and your dogs goals have been met, we look forward to building long-lasting results with you!
For some owners, the next step may be transitioning into a daycare environment once their dog is ready. For others, the focus may simply be enjoying a calmer, more manageable dog in everyday life.
Dogs aiming for daycare will be told when their dog is ready and safe to be part of our daycare family. You will get some cute graduation photos celebrating your dogs amazing progress as well.
Either way, the goal is that you leave the program with both a dog and a plan you feel confident moving forward with.
How will this program improve my day-to-day life with my dog?
This program is about more than just training, it’s about changing what life feels like with your dog.
Instead of planning your day around avoiding problems, you can start to enjoy simple things again; walks without stress, having people over, or relaxing at home with a dog that settles more easily.
For our clients, it’s the difference between constantly managing behaviour and finally feeling like they have the dog they hoped for from the beginning.
Behavioural Rehabilitation Program
A Structured Path to Positive Change!
At ABT+, we understand that dealing with a dog who has behavioural issues can be challenging, both for the dog and their owners. That’s why we’ve designed our Behavioural Rehabilitation Program to offer a structured, detailed, and compassionate approach to addressing behavioural concerns. Whether you’re twisting your life around your dog’s anxiety, crossing the street to avoid other dogs, or you are scared of your own dog’s aggression, this program is crafted to help them develop better habits and integrate more comfortably into your life and community and give you the life you imagined when you got a dog.
Comprehensive Approach to Behavioural Change
Our Behavioural Rehabilitation Program is tailored to meet the specific needs of each dog, ensuring that both their emotional and behavioural issues are addressed in a safe, controlled, and effective manner. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. We work closely with you to understand the root causes of your dog’s behaviour and develop a plan that will help them overcome their challenges. This leads to practical, positive, and long-lasting results.
First Visit: Getting to Know Your Dog
The first step in the program is an initial consult where we’ll get to know your dog and discuss your goals for the rehabilitation process. This 30-minute private consultation is scheduled at a time booked before their first day in the behavioural rehabilitation program. During this meeting, we’ll dive into your dog’s behavioural history, the specific issues you’re experiencing, and any underlying triggers or concerns as well as your long-term goals. This will give our team a clear understanding of what’s going on and how best to proceed.
In this session, we’ll also ask about your dog’s routine, environment, and any previous training or experiences that might be contributing to their behaviour. Understanding your dog’s history and background will help us create a personalised rehabilitation plan that addresses their unique needs and challenges and ensure you are confident and empowered to back up the training at home.
Structured Training Day: Consistency and Care
Once your dog’s initial consultation is complete and we’ve developed a tailored plan, the real work begins! You’ll drop off your dog at our facility between 6:30am and 9am, where our team will take them through to start their day. Our expert trainers will give your dog some one-on-one training, focusing on your goals and helping your dog progress and overcome challenges. After their active session, they recieve passive training where they can rest and learn to settle in challenging environments. Passive training takes place up until the pick-up appointment time you have booked, ensuring that your dog receives plenty of attention and training throughout the day in a calm and controlled environment.
During this time, your dog will work with one of our qualified behavioural trainers who specialise in canine behaviour. The training will be structured and focused, helping your dog make positive changes in their behaviour while building trust and confidence.
Our trainers will focus on areas such as socialisation, impulse control, obedience, and addressing any anxiety, fear, or aggression your dog may be experiencing. Using a reward-based approach, we ensure that your dog feels safe and supported, while also teaching them how to respond more appropriately to different stimuli and situations.
Detailed Handover and Homework Plans
At the end of the day, we’ll make sure to provide you with a detailed handover, where our trainer will meet with you to discuss the day’s progress and provide feedback. This is a key part of the process, as it helps you stay involved and informed about your dog’s development.
The handover session will include a breakdown of the training goals, areas your dog is excelling in, and areas that may need additional attention. This is also when we’ll provide you with homework plans; specific exercises or activities that you can continue practicing at home to reinforce the training and help your dog progress.
We believe in the importance of keeping owners engaged in the rehabilitation process. The homework exercises are an integral part of the program because they allow you to continue supporting your dog’s learning at home, helping to maintain the consistency needed for lasting behavioural changes.
Progress Reports: Tracking Success
Throughout the program, we will provide you with progress reports to track your dog’s development and measure their success. These reports will give you a clear picture of where your dog is at in terms of behavioural improvement and which areas may need more focus. This feedback ensures that both you and your dog are on the right track, and it helps us adjust the rehabilitation plan if necessary.
Getting Ready for Daycare Integration
One of the ultimate goals for many owners in our Behavioural Rehabilitation Program is to help their dog transition into a daycare environment once they’ve made significant progress. As your dog becomes more confident and well-behaved, they’ll be ready to join a daycare group with other dogs. Our trainers will work with your dog on socialisation and group play, helping them feel comfortable in these social settings.
If daycare is not your goal that’s ok, we will still work with you during this program to acheive your goals
